Not going to Tahiti or Fiji this year? Can’t make it to Greece? Can’t even get to the South of France? Are you stuck in Paris for the summer? Quel dommage!
This summer, as in the last six summers, Paris is turning the banks of the Seine into a beach, complete with sand, palm trees, and fruity drinks. So bring out your beach towel and your bathing suit (no g-strings or nudity allowed!) and hit the beach along the Seine.
From July 21 to August 21, 2008, Paris Plages will be taking place on two sites within Paris: voie Georges Pompidou (in the 4th) and from the Bassin la Villette to Stalingrad (in the 19th). The opening night concert will be given outisde at the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville by the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, a chorus of 120 singers who will perform Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on 21 July, at 6 pm. Afterwards head to voie Georges Pompidou after 7 pm to enjoy the evening at a large outdoor picnic as only the Parisians know how to do it, stretching for 3kms.
A few things to do:
At the Bassin la Villette you will find pedal and rowing boats, canoes and sailing. There will be a sand beach, a children’s garden, climbing towers, a floating terrace, a picnic area and a garden of mist where spray misters will keep eveyone cool.
There are a number of places to play petanque in the city, but the place to play the national game of France during Paris Plages will be at the Pont Louis-Philippe.
The music spectacles are reserved for independent music labels, and the musical events are near the Pont Sully, smack dab in the middle of Paris Plages.
