Liberation reported today that Sarkozy has announced that starting April 4th, 2009, French museums and state monuments will be free for those under 25 years old as well as teachers. This comes after a recent experiment by the Minister of Culture at fifteen national establishements, museums and monuments in the first half of 2008. Sarkozy also reminded people that this will not be the end of museum funding but will make them flourish, because opening the museums to the young will encourage them to be lifelong visitors as adults.

The Minister of Culture, Christine Albanel, is not so sure it will work this way. The cultural institutions did see a rise in visitors during the experimental time, but it was believed to be a rise in visits from people who were already going to the museums anyway.

Time will tell, and in the meantime it’s a good thing for the young people visiting France.

— Liberation
